GORDON RESEARCH CONFERENCE: PLASMA PROCESSING SCIENCE

The Gordon Research Conference "Plasma Processing Science and Societal Grand Challenges" has been held at Bryant University, USA, July 22-27, 2012. The Gordon conference series provides an opportunity for scientists to discuss recent results and current challenges without subsequently publishing them in conference proceedings. The special format of the conference, with ample time for scheduled discussions and opportunities for informal exchanges during the afternoon, also creates an ideal atmosphere for the joint development of new ideas. The main focus this year was on plasmas in the field of renewable energy as well as in the rapidly developing field of plasma medicine.

Prof. Achim von Keudell, whose presentation included the latest results in HPPMS, was elected by the plenary with a large majority as the next Vice-Chair of the conference and thus automatically becomes the next Chair of GRC Plasma Processing Science after the next event in 2014, which will be hosted by Prof. Jane P. Chang. In addition, Jun.-Prof. Jan Benedikt, Prof. Jörg Winter and Ph.D. student Hendrik Bahre participated in the conference and presented their results at the poster sessions.

EPS-ICPPP 2012

Prof. Rainer Stenzel (UCLA, Los Angeles), Prof. Padma Kant Shukla (RUB International Chair), and Prof Sigbert Kuhn (University of Innsbruck) during the reception of the Joint EPS-ICPDP Stockholm (July 2nd-6th, 2012) in the Town Hall of Stockholm City where the Nobel Prize ceremony in Physics, Chemistry and Medicin is held on 10th December every year. The EPS-ICPPP-2012 was also attended by Prof. Dr. Jörg Winter, Speaker of the RD Plasmas with Complex Interactions. There were 800 delegates participating at this international event and many distinguished speakers reported on the cutting edge aspects of modern plasma physics including basic plasma sciences, high-energy density plasmas including novel collective interactions in quantum plasmas, fusion energy (magnetic fusion and ICF), astroplasmas and space sciences, and industrial applications of low-temperature and dusty plasmas

ICPM 4

From 17 - 21 June 2012, the 4th International Conference on Plasma Medicine (ICPM 4) has been held in Orléans (France). The working groups of the "Plasmadecon" project from the Research Department "Plasmas with Complex Interactions" of the RUB were represented with a delegation of seven participants, including two presentations by Prof. Peter Awakowicz and Jun.-Prof. Julia Bandow as well as five posters. The subfields of electrical engineering, physics and biology were represented.
Every two years the ICPM brings together interdisciplinary scientists working on the very new and for research highly interesting topic of medical application of low temperature plasmas. The 4th conference can already boast more than 260 participants. Germany is the second most represented research nation after the host country.

3RD HIPIMS CONFERENCE IN SHEFFIELD

PD Teresa de los Arcos and Dr. Ante Hecimovic attended 3rd International Conference on High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HIPIMS) in Sheffield, on 19th and 20th June, 2012. Ante Hecimovic presented the latest results in the study of the instabilities occurring in the ON phase of the HIPIMS discharge. The aim of the conference is to gather scientists from all groups using HIPIMS to deposit thin films or to understand the complex processes taking place in the high power impulse magnetron discharge. The attendees present the latest findings in the field which offers ideal opportunity to hear about the current achievements in the field and discuss potential future collaborations.

18.06.2012 - VISIT AT CENTRE FOR NON EQUILIBRIUM PROCESSES IN BELGRADE

From May 3rd to 12th, 2012, Dr. Ilija Stefanovic and PhD student Thomas Kuschel visited their cooperation partners Dr. Dragana Maric and Prof. Zoran Lj. Petrovic at the Centre for Non Equilibrium Processes in Belgrade (Serbia). During this time, the team focused on a model which was developed by Phelps and Petrovic for standard size parallel plate dc discharges (discharge gap d = 1 cm) and modified it for the micro discharges. The model and the experimental results (measured in Bochum) agree very well as shown in the figure.

16.05.2012 - SARA GALLIAN VISITED PROF. HIT­CHON AND PROF. KUSH­NER

Du­ring the last week of April, Sara Gal­li­an, re­se­arch as­sis­tant at TET In­sti­tu­te wor­king in the SFB-TR 87 frame­work, has vi­si­ted Prof. Hit­chon and Prof. Kush­ner to di­s­cuss on the si­mu­la­ti­on of the HPPMS pro­cess. Nick Hit­chon is a Pro­fes­sor at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Wis­con­sin-Ma­di­son and an ex­pert in the field of ki­ne­tic plas­ma si­mu­la­ti­ons. He is co­ope­ra­ting with the TET group on the phe­no­me­no­lo­gi­cal mo­de­ling of the re­cent­ly ob­ser­ved ro­ta­ting in­sta­bi­li­ty du­ring the HPPMS ope­ra­ti­on. Mark Kush­ner is a Pro­fes­sor at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Mi­chi­gan and is head of the Com­pu­ta­tio­nal Plas­ma Sci­ence and En­gi­nee­ring Group (CPSEG) in the De­part­ment of Elec­tri­cal and Com­pu­ter En­gi­nee­ring. Prof. Kush­ner is a well known ex­pert in the field of Hy­brid Mo­del­ling and the main de­ve­loper of the Hy­brid Plas­ma Equip­ment Model (HPEM). HPEM is a com­pre­hen­si­ve mo­de­ling plat­form for low pres­su­re plas­ma pro­ces­sing re­ac­tors, ca­pa­ble of ad­dres­sing Ma­gne­tron sput­ter and Io­ni­zed Metal Phy­si­cal Vapor De­po­si­ti­on (IMPVD). Du­ring the visit, it was di­s­cus­sed the pos­si­bi­li­ty use HPEM in the preli­mi­na­ry si­mu­la­ti­on of the HPPMS di­sch­ar­ge.

39TH ICMCTF 2012 IN SAN DIEGO 

From April 23 to 27, 2012, the 39th International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films (ICMCTF) has been held in San Diego, USA. The SFB-TR 87 supported this most important conference in the thin film field with 15 participants and actively contributed to the success of the event. The young scientists and the PhD students could have many talks and discussions with experienced scientists of the scene. In this way, each individual was able to generate an advantage for himself and can use this and the newly gained contacts for future work in the SFB. From the SFB's point of view, the highlights of this year's event were the invited lectures by Professor Schneider (MCh, RWTH Aachen) and Professor Bobzin (IOT, RWTH Aachen). Through these and the many presentations and poster contributions from the SFB, it was also possible to present the SFB to the public.

10.04.2012 - JENNIFER STEPANEK IN MICHIGAN

Doktorandin Jennifer Stepanek aus der Nachwuchsgruppe Mikrobielle Antibiotikaforschung von Jun.-Prof. Julia Bandow ist vom 28.01. bis zum 27.04.2012 zu Gast bei Prof. Jakob im Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology der University of Michigan. Im Rahmen der Forschung für das Research Department „Plasmas with Complex Interactions“ untersuchte sie im Jakob Lab die Wirkung von Plasma auf das Protein Hsp33. Dabei zeigte sich eine Induktion der Chaperon-Aktivität von Hsp33 durch die Plasmabehandlung.

IBEX SWT and Workshop "Three Years of Observations with IBEX - What did we learn about the Outer Heliosphere?"

Date: 28 - 31 March 2012, Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, Germany

Three years after the successful launch of the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) and, thus, after three years of measurements of Energetic Neutral Atoms (ENAs), it is time to critically assess what new insights into the physics of the outer heliosphere and its boundaries have been gained from this mission. Such assessment will be valuable because the science of IBEX is related to several central topics of present heliophysical research, namely
(i) the plasma and magnetic field structure of the outer heliosphere and the local interstellar medium,
(ii) the details of the interaction between the solar and the so-called interstellar wind,
(iii) the global properties of the termination shock and the heliopause, and
(iv) the transport of suprathermal particles.
Due to the expertise of the IBEX team participants and the invited international scientists, that ranges from theory and numerical modelling to `remote' observations and in-situ measurements, the workshop will cover all aspects of these research topics.

Vom 6.2. bis 2.3.2012 war Doktorand Rüdiger Reuter zu Gast an der Paul-Sabatier Universität in Toulouse (Frankreich). Am Laboratorie Plasma & Conversion d’Energie (Laplace) untersuchte er in der Gruppe von Nicolas Gherardi die Abscheidung dünner Siliziumoxid Schichten durch eine DBD Entladung. Eine Beschichtung Monolage für Monolage, wie sie auch in an der Ruhr-Universität in den Arbeitsgruppen Gekoppelte Plasma-Festkörpersysteme und Reaktiver Plasmen in der DFG Forschergruppe 1123 durchgeführt wird, wurde auf eine DBD Entladung übertragen und erfolgreich zum Abscheiden kohlenstofffreier Schichten angewendet.
