Several contributions on the International Conference on Phenomena in Ionized Gases (ICPIG)

In July, the scientific work of the CRC 1316 has been presented in four talks and several posters in Aix en Provence during the ICPIG conference. At this conference, various fields within plasma physics are joined: Modelling and experiments, from fundamental research to applications. CRC Members from the physics, chemistry and engineering department contributed to the fruitful scientific exchange. One highlight was an excursion to the ITER site; the large research reactor for fusion, currently being built in Cadarache.

Splinter Meeting at the German Astronomical Society Annual Meeting 2025

The CRC 1491 contributed to the 2025 Annual Meeting of the German Astronomical Society (Astronomische Gesellschaft) with the dedicated Splinter Session “Multi-messenger Signatures of Feedback Processes in Galaxies”, organized by Dominik Bomans and Dominik Elsässer.

This session brought together experts to discuss recent advances in understanding feedback mechanisms in galaxies through multi-messenger and multi-wavelength observations. The presentations and discussions explored how active galactic nuclei, massive stars, cosmic rays, and magnetic fields shape the interstellar medium, drive turbulence, and influence cosmic ray transport.

CRC1316 presents at ISPC 26

Seven researchers from the CRC1316 presented their results at the international symposium on plasma chemistry ISPC 26 in Minneapolis 15.6.-20.6.2025. The contributions included one invited lecture, 4 oral presentations, and one poster. The conference offered the possibility to interact with the peers in the community and to exchange new ideas and identify new trends. 

DPG Göttingen 2025

From March 31 to April 4, 2025, the spring conference of the German Physical Society (DPG), Matter and Cosmos Section, took place in Göttingen.

The SFB 1316 participated in the spring conference with three invited lectures, numerous presentations, and poster presentations. With these contributions, we not only presented the research work of the SFB 1316, but also sought to engage in active exchange with researchers in order to strengthen the network and good cooperation.

Two PhD Students at Hakone conference

Soad Mohsenimehr and Henrik van Impel (A6) gave presentations on their latest research at the 18th Hakone Conference, which took place in Padua, Italy, from September 1st to 6th, 2024. The event featured numerous insightful presentations dealing with low-temperature plasmas at atmospheric pressure and their applications in plasma chemical processes. One of the highlights of the conference was the active participation of students: 22 of the 56 presentations were given by PhD students, which created a very appealing environment for young researchers. In particular, dielectric barrier discharges were discussed in terms of their efficiency when used with catalysts and the basic physical dynamics of the discharges. Other topics included plasma applications in agriculture and food processing as well as the interaction between plasma and liquid. In addition to the scientific findings, the conference provided an excellent platform for PhD students to network with international participants from 24 countries, promoting collaboration between disciplines.

Five Posters at ESCAMPIG

This year's ESCAMPIG conference took place in Brno, Czech Republic. Three members of Experimental Physics II and one member of AEPT from Bochum took part and contributed to the conference with five posters. In addition to the interesting plenary lectures by well-known personalities such as Peter Bruggeman (USA), Luís L. Alves (Portugal), Kinga Kutasi (Hungary) and Holger Kersten (Germany), there was a variety of around 160 other posters on both modelling and experimental topics. In addition to the professional exchange, the conference offered excellent evening events, such as the welcome party with a dance class and Czech specialities or the conference dinner with live music and a cosy atmosphere. We had many interesting discussions at the conference and met new and old acquaintances, which is why we came away from the conference with very positive experiences overall.

15th workshop on Frontiers in Low-Temperature Plasma Diagnostics

From 29th April until Thursday 2nd May, members of the Department of Pulsed Plasma Systems from the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague, Czech Republic, hosted the 15th Frontiers in Low-Temperature Plasma Diagnostics Workshop (FLTPD XV) in Liblice, Czech Republic. This biannual workshop was attended by a few members of the SFB1316 to connect with other researchers working in low-temperature plasma diagnostics from all over the world. Over the course of four days, nearly 30 lectures were held, discussing recent advancements and results of a variety of diagnostic techniques such as emission spectroscopy, electrical measurements, LIF & TALIF, cavity ringdown spectroscopy, EFISH and many more. Additionally, two poster sessions were held, providing further opportunities for discussions.

 

CRC 1316 participated at IWM 12 in Orleans

The 12th International Workshop on Microplasmas in 2024 has been held in Orleans, France, from June 3rd to 7th. One Invited, five Contributed talks, and two posters were presented by scientists from Ruhr University Bochum. The conference venue was the Museum Des Beaux-Arts with a nice location and environment in the centre of Orlean. The workshop covered wide topics on the microplasma sources and their generation in the gas phase or liquid dealing with interface behaviour from one side and diagnostics of microplasma sources and their application in material processing, plasma medicine, agriculture, etc. The modeling section provides research on the numerical simulation of streamer dynamics to the 0D Global kinetic model. Very insightful talks and discussions which in the end led to the overall view of microplasma's fundamental aspects and their application.

ISPC25 with the best oral presentation prize winner from RUB

The biennial international symposium on plasma chemistry was held in Kyoto, Japan at the end of May. A large delegation of Bochum plasma physicists and plas engineers attended the conference.

The conference covered most aspects of plasma from different fields: plasma medicine, plasma-based gas conversion, plasma in liquid, plasma process and material engineering, plasma spectroscopy and diagnostics, etc. The symposium provided a great opportunity to make new contacts and maintain relationships. The poster session was also very informative and provided a great opportunity to learn about the latest developments in plasma chemistry.

Overall, the 25th Symposium on Plasma Chemistry in Kyoto was a great success.

Congratulations to Simon Kreuznacht (EP2, RUB) for winning an award at the ISPC25 in Kyoto for his oral presentation on “Space resolved temperature measurements in an argon methane microwave plasma used for hydrogen production”. The Oral Presentation Awards are assigned to the best oral presentations provided by students.

Heraeus Seminar "Non thermal plasmas for sustainable chemistry"

The CRC 1316 was involved in the organization of the 785 WE Heraeus Seminar "Non thermal plasmas for sustainable chemistry" that was held in Bad Honnef 22.4.-27.4.2023. The meeting was organized by Yiguang Yu (Princeton), Tomo Nozaki (Tokyo Tech), Annemie Bogaerts (U Antwerp), and A. von Keudell (RUB, SFB 1316). The SFB 1316 contributed with two invited presentations and 6 posters. The seminar with 80 attendees provided a broad overview on the field and critical discusssions about the challenges and potential of plasma methods for sustainable chemistry. 

DPG spring meeting

At the annually DPG (German Physical Society) meeting, the plasma groups from RUB campus had many contributions during this event. At least eleven oral presentations including one invited talk as well as eleven poster presentations were given by CRC 1316 members.

Plathinium conference in Antibes

Several projects from the Coordinated Research Centers CRC 1316 and SFB-TR 87 presented their research at the 1st Plathinium Conference (September 16th until September 20th) in Antibes. This conference is a newly combined meeting of the former French vacuum congress, the French assembly on magnetron sputtering and thin films as well as the French conference on ion beam techniques. The PhD students Sascha Monje-Thiemann, Julian Held and Dennis Engels presented their work on low pressure magnetized plasmas in the poster session. Christian Hoppe gave an oral contribution on defects in SiOx coatings. Achim von Keudell presented a plenary lecture on atmospheric pressure plasma chemistry and contributed with a tutorial on fundamentals of plasmas to a workshop preceding the meeting. Achim von Keudell was also elected to become the chair of the 2nd Plathinium conference in 2021.
